Hello! In this blog I would share a rising issue in Karachi.

PROBLEM STATEMENT: Everyone deserves fulfillment of their basic necessities. Clean, drinking water is one of the main requirements of life. Unfortunately, many people do not have access to it. In the slums of Karachi, people are deprived of water, their basic need.

BACKGROUND: Karachi is the city of lights, a city full of business and entrepreneurial ventures, yet it still faces trivial problems such as water shortage. The priviliged ones can easily order a water tank to fulfil their necessities but the poor portion of our society can not. And I think it’s high time we solve this problem, or atleast try to.

There are many slums in Karachi who do not have access to clean drinking water. The kids wander all day long just to get one bottle of water and still get contaminated water. This also highlights the environmental pollution in Karachi. Being the biggest city of Pakistan, The factories, vehicles etc contaminate our environment. This blog focuses on one solution to these 2 problems.

CURRENT SITUATION: I have heard my maids complain almost daily about water shortage in theri area and its really disheartening. Let’s see the current water situation in Karachi in this scorching weather.

This is the latest update on situation in Karachi which is quite alarming!! According to ANI, On 5th April, the temperature in karachi was 43.6 degree celcius which was the highest temperature recorded since april 1947 (source: meteorological department). You can read the full article from the link below:

It also states that Karachi gets its water supply from 250km away from the city. Which makes the transportation cost more expensive to the poor.

Also, We all are aware of global warming issues. It has risen significantly since the start of 4th industrial revolution. With all the technical advancements, our nature is the one suffering. It is not only harmful to us, humans, but also to wildlife. The article below says that if the temperature rises more than 3 degree celcius then unique island species are at high risk of extinction.

SOLUTION: To solve these issues, I have come up with one solution. We know that Plastic is most harmful human invention. It needs to be recycled so that we do not have to make more damage to our environment.

The solution is to get the empty plastic bottles from the poor, and get them clean, drinking water in exchange. This plan is executable if we follow following steps:

  1. Start with one area initially. Persuade the people there and gain their trust by being empathetic.
  2. Install bottle collecting bins in the area and ask people to dispose plastic bottles in there.
  3. Contact a registered NGO and ask them for help. Ask them to give us volunteers for collecting those bottles at least twice a month.
  4. Contact a recycling organization and ask them for cash in exchange of plastic bottles delivered to them. They will most likely agree because those people are already working to reduce environment destruction.
  5. Market the idea through social media and get funds.
  6. With the money from recycling organization and the funds, get bottled water from a water company and distribute them among people.
